Automata are machines that operate independently of external control.

Fun Fun Fun 'till Daleks Take the T-Bird AwayThe word is often associated with novelty decorative machines that may play music and / or animate small diorama like scenes but it could equally be applied to modern robots or any machine capable of operating without external control.

Paper being a highly versatile material can be used to create quite intricate automata. Several automata makers can be found on the web and a growing number support CraftRobo.

The automata pictured left is typical of the kind of paper machines that can be found. It is constructed entirely from paper and operated by turning a crank handle but some people will incorporate other components such as tooth picks, drawing pins, drinking straws, etc to compliment the design. Some have even begun incorporating component like motors and solar panels to create truly independent machines.
